MARIE

The Tiny Wonder of Sungai Awan
In July 2014, the International Animal Rescue (IAR) team in Ketapang welcomed a tiny baby orangutan named Marie—a fragile, malnourished infant weighing only 2 kilograms. At just seven months old, she had already endured unimaginable hardship. Bought from traders and quickly abandoned when her care became too difficult, Marie was found crying alone in the jungle, where she was rescued and brought to safety just in time.
Initially housed in the quiet, temporary enclosures of Sungai Awan, Marie began to regain her strength under the expert care of the veterinary team. Despite her poor condition, she had a strong appetite and an even stronger will to live. Her progress through quarantine was steady, and after a few gentle play sessions with fellow youngster Onyo, Marie officially joined baby school.
Though she’s still the smallest in her group, Marie is a bold climber and eager explorer. She loves her forest enrichment sessions—searching the canopy for hidden fruits and practicing skills like branch-swaying and climbing. Due to her young age and small size, Marie receives extra attention and supplemental feeding from her babysitters and spends her nights safely inside the baby school building.
Marie is one of many young orangutans at IAR who are part of a long-term rehabilitation program designed to restore natural behaviors and prepare them for a life in the wild. With her curious spirit and determined heart, Marie is already showing promise as a future graduate.
