MERAH

Wild from the Start, Free at Last

On 26 August 2012, a young orangutan was spotted wandering alone along a roadside in Tanah Merah, West Kalimantan. He was just three years old. Fortunately, the kind-hearted people who found him knew about the nearby International Animal Rescue (IAR) Centre in Ketapang and brought him straight there. The little red-haired survivor was named Merah, meaning “red” in Indonesian, both for his colouring and the area of his rescue.

Merah was wary and wild, showing signs he hadn’t been kept in captivity for long—if at all. Though there were some faint wounds on his body, possibly from a chain, he was in generally good health and showed a strong instinct to avoid humans. He was given space and peace during his quarantine, where he gradually began to heal and observe the world around him.

Once introduced to baby school, Merah’s independence continued to shine. He enjoyed playing with the likes of Pedro and Cemong, but also valued his solo time in the trees, exploring, nest-building, and foraging like a true forest-dweller. Behavioral assessments placed him at the top of the class in forest school alongside Marcela and Roy, where his natural instincts flourished.

Merah’s instincts proved invaluable: in February 2020, after years of rehabilitation, he was among five orangutans—alongside Monti, Anggun, Ujang, and Utat—released into Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park. Today, Merah roams free, returning to the forest life he was born for, thanks to IAR’s dedicated efforts and the compassion of those who first found him.
