ARTIST'S REASON FOR PARTICIPATING

Is simple…… I love all animals, but the Orangutan needs me, you, all of us,  and in my own small way I want to be part of a solution to assist in the protection and ongoing survival of this beautiful, funny, wonderful creature.

ROY

Gentle Giant with a Curious Mind

Rescued in September 2012 by International Animal Rescue (IAR), Roy was estimated to be around 3–4 years old and already showed signs of deep habituation to humans. Likely taken from his mother at a very young age, Roy had spent much of his early life in captivity before being confiscated by the forestry department in Pontianak, West Kalimantan.

After a stint in quarantine at IAR’s rescue centre in Ketapang, Roy transitioned to baby school, where he quickly became one of the biggest and most playful members of his group. Known for his good nature and laid-back confidence, he could often be seen wrestling with Cemong or Pedro and happily joining others in climbing activities.

Roy’s progress didn’t slow down. In forest school, he was among the top of the class—alongside Butan, Merah, and Marcela—regularly exploring the treetops and showing a keen interest in forest life. As much as he enjoyed adventuring, Roy also remained deeply inquisitive, known for checking every bag, pocket, and button within reach—especially if a caregiver wasn’t paying attention!

Despite his size and strength, Roy is one of the gentlest orangutans in the program, often hitching a ride on the shoulders of babysitters during jungle outings. Calm, friendly, and full of curiosity, Roy represents everything that makes these intelligent primates so endearing—and why their protection is vital.
